Why Are More Men Choosing Gynecomastia Surgery (Male Breast Reduction)?

2 Minute Read:

Enlarged breast tissue in men is common, but despite its prevalence, men are only recently becoming comfortable enough to talk about it and seek help.

This issue, called gynecomastia, is best remedied through a simple, straightforward surgical procedure known as male breast reduction or gynecomastia surgery

What Is Gynecomastia?

An excess of male breast tissue (glandular tissue) is called gynecomastia. There are many causes of this issue and just as many variations in severity and symptoms.

Causes of gynecomastia include:

  • Anabolic steroid use
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Recreational drug use
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Obesity
  • Certain medications

In some cases, typically with adolescent boys, gynecomastia results from hormonal imbalances. Some boys experience excess breast tissue and fat during puberty, and minor issues are often rectified naturally as hormone levels even out.

However, in most cases of adult men, the most effective and permanent solution is through male breast reduction surgery.

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

As cases of gynecomastia increase, along with better support systems and cultural acceptance of aesthetic surgery, gynecomastia surgery is becoming more common with more sophisticated techniques.

The primary goal of this procedure is to eliminate excess fat, breast tissue, and any stretched or sagging skin to reveal a toned, flat, masculine-looking chest. While specific treatment plans will vary depending on the patient’s needs, gynecomastia surgery will involve the following technique(s):

Liposuction can be used to remove excess fat in the breast area. Small incisions are made around the chest before a small, thin tube called a cannula is inserted to remove fat.

Glandular tissue can also be surgically removed. If the gynecomastia has caused the skin to stretch, the excess, sagging skin can also be removed to create a flatter, even chest surface.

Your specific gynecomastia treatment plan will be created during your consultation.

Who Can Benefit From Gynecomastia Surgery?

Any man who is unhappy with the appearance of their enlarged breasts or who feels that their chest is negatively impacting their daily life can benefit from gynecomastia surgery.

Good candidates for gynecomastia surgery should also:

  • Be generally in good health
  • Be non-smokers or willing to quit
  • Have realistic expectations for results
  • Have a positive outlook on their bodies
  • Not use anabolic steroids

The stigma surrounding aesthetic surgery for men has all but disappeared, and more men feel comfortable expressing how they’d like to change their bodies. Gynecomastia surgery can improve your life in more ways than aesthetics.

By improving your outer appearance, you can experience an increase in confidence in multiple avenues of your life:

  • Less discomfort when shirtless or wearing fitted t-shirts
  • Higher self-esteem, improving success in business and personal relationships

Gynecomastia surgery is more common than ever — take advantage of this life-changing procedure!
