Hair Replacement Surgery

Many men believe that their appearance has a major impact on their career advancement.  Baldness and receding hairlines make some men look much older, worn out and less productive.  Today men are regaining some of their youthful appearance with the help of hair replacement therapy.

Hair loss is caused by a combination of a family history of hair loss, aging and a change in hormones.  The earlier you begin to lose your hair, the more severe the baldness will become.  Hair replacement surgery takes your existing hair and finds more efficient uses for it.

Good candidates for hair replacement are those that have healthy hair growth on the back and sides of the head.  These areas will serve as donor sites from which grafts will be taken.  Texture, color and curliness may affect the final cosmetic results.  The goal of surgery is to camouflage the thinning areas and give you more fullness.

Hair transplant techniques can include strip grafts, slit grafts, punch grafts and mini or micro-grafts in men who want a modest change in their hair fullness.  The various grafts differ in their size and shape, depending on the number of hairs to be transplanted.

The surgery involves removing small patches of scalp, which include hairs, from donor sites and relocating them to the thinning areas.  Punch grafts usually contain 10-15 hairs.  Smaller mini-grafts contain two to four hairs, while micro-grafts will have only one or two hairs.  A slit graft will contain about four to ten hairs which are placed into slits made in the scalp.  Long thin strip grafts contain 30-40 hairs.

Usually several surgical sessions are needed to achieve the desired hair fullness and there are healing intervals between each session.  It may take eighteen to twenty-four months before you see the final result of your hair replacement surgery.  The amount of hair coverage you will need depends on the color and texture of your hair.  Coarse, light-colored or gray hair provides for better coverage than dark-colored or fine hair.  The number of plugs transplanted at each session varies with each patient, but average about fifty.  Micro-grafts and mini-grafts are comprised of up to 700 hairs per session.

You will need to take it easy for a day or two after your surgery.  Strenuous exercise should be curtailed for about three weeks because it can increase blood flow to the scalp resulting in bleeding.  Any aching, throbbing or discomfort can be controlled with pain medication prescribed by your surgeon.

Hair replacement surgery can enhance your appearance by making you look younger.  It will boost your self-esteem, giving you the self-confidence you need to compete in today’s busy, competitive world.
