American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Reports Plastic Surgery Statistics For 2011
Plastic Surgery Statistics For 2011
From the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS):
NEW YORK, NY (March 20, 2012) – The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) today released their 15thannual multi-specialty procedural statistics. The Aesthetic Society, which has collected plastic surgery procedural statistics since 1997, says the overall number of cosmetic surgery procedures has increased 197 percent since the tracking of the statistics first began. Almost 9.2 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2011. The most frequently performed surgical procedure was lipoplasty (liposuction) and the most popular nonsurgical procedure was injections of Botulinum Toxin Type A (including Botox and Dysport).
"For fifteen years these statistics have been a large part of the Aesthetic Society’s public education mission,” said Jeffrey M. Kenkel, MD, President of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. “Since 1997, the interest in and demand for cosmetic plastic surgery has risen exponentially and our comprehensive statistics continue to show that.”
Cosmetic surgical procedures increased almost 1 percent in the past year, with over 1.6 million procedures in 2011. Surgical procedures accounted for 18% of the total numbers of procedure performed representing 63% of total expenditures. The top five surgical procedures were:
- Liposuction (325,332)
- Breast augmentation (316,848)
- Abdominoplasty (149,410)
- Eyelid surgery (147,540)
- Breast Lift (127,054)
Cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures performed one of the surveyed physicians decreased almost 2 percent, with over 7.5 million procedures in 2011. Nonsurgical procedures accounted for 82% of the total number of procedures performed representing 37% of total expenditures.
For the first time ever this survey asked the doctors for the total number of non-surgical procedures being performed in their practices by BOTH physicians and their physician assistants and nurse injectors.
"Growth in demand will likely coninue to grow as baby boomers and their offspring begin to explore surgical options," said Dr. Kenkel. "Minimally-invasive procedures such as Botox and soft tissue fillers work to a point. However, as you age and gravity takes over, surgical procedures that lift the skin and reshape the underlying tissues are necessary in order to show significant improvement."
Women had almost 8.4 million cosmetic procedures, 91% of the total. The number of cosmetic procedures for women increased over 208% from 1997. The top five surgical procedures for women were: breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, eyelid surgery, and breast lift.
Men had almost 800,000 cosmetic procedures, 9% of the total. The number of cosmetic procedures for men increased over 121% from 1997. The top five surgical procedures for men were: liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, breast reduction to treat enlarged male breast, and facelift.

Should your breast implants be above or below the muscle?
Among the many decisions that need to be made when you choose to undergo breast augmentation—implant type, size, etc.—you and your surgeon will also have to choose if the implant should go above or below the muscle. This comes down to much more than just personal preference.
With subglandular placement, the implant is placed over the pectoral muscle and below the breast tissue. This could lead to a somewhat shorter recovery period and the benefit of a slight lift for those with mild sagging (without a breast lift). This also means the implant is closer to the surface, so it could be more visible or more easily felt. With submuscular placement, the implant is placed below both the pectoral muscle and the breast tissue. This is more appropriate in slender patients who have less natural breast tissue to cover the implant; however, it may not be recommended for those with athletic builds. Less palpable than subglandular placement, submuscular placement means less risk of implant visibility and interference with mammography. However, a few more days of recovery time may be necessary. Jordan “Katie Price” Celebrity Surgery Starts a Trend
Britons are becoming increasingly obsessed with their appearance, sparking a boom in plastic surgery.

Jordan “Katie Price”
Celebrities who splash out on facelifts and implants and the increasing amount of TV coverage may have started the surge, say experts at BUPA.
The private health care provider reported a 20 per cent increase in cosmetic procedures at its 34 UK hospitals in 2003.
Demand is particularly high among 25 to 35-year-olds, reflecting the desire of young professionals to improve their appearance or remain youthful looking as they approach middle age.
Breast enlargement is the most popular procedure, accounting for more than one in four of all cosmetic procedures last year – with the number of women operated on up 28 per cent on the previous year.

Around 100,000 British women are now thought to have had implants and the increasing popularity of breast enlargement comes despite warnings from U.S. researchers that they may make it harder for doctors to spot the signs of cancer.
BUPA also saw a 38 per cent increase in the number of facelifts performed, the biggest increase for any procedure.
Nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, breast reduction, breast uplift and tummy tuck operations are also becoming increasingly common.
This is despite recent reports highlighting concerns that many clinics are failing to properly inform patients of the risks involved in the most common treatments, such as Botox injections.
Dr Annabel Bentley, BUPA’s assistant medical director, said people have a right to cosmetic surgery if they wish, but should carefully consider the potential pitfalls and seek more than one doctor’s opinion.
‘Interest in cosmetic surgery is increasing and there are now
a wide range of procedures,’ she added.
‘Many people want to change their appearance in some way, such as altering a feature they’ve always disliked.
‘Plastic surgery alone will not solve any personal problems or land you a dream job. Weigh up all the options and make sure it is absolutely right for you.’
A report from the Consumers’ Association earlier this year said that many clinics overlooked or failed to properly explain the risks and possible side-effects of a range of treatments.
These included laser and chemical peels to remove the top layers of skin and produce a ‘youthful glow’ and Botox injections to get rid of wrinkles. Actress Leslie Ash infamously discovered that seemingly simple cosmetic procedures can go badly wrong when she was left with a ‘trout pout’ after treatment to plump up her lips.
